Power battery cooling system seals Description
Importance
Ensure cooling efficiency: The power battery will generate a lot of heat during the working process, and the normal operation of the cooling system is essential to maintain the performance and life of the battery. Seals prevent leakage of cooling media, such as coolant, and ensure that coolant in the cooling system can circulate properly between pipes, radiators, and other components. If the seal fails and the coolant leaks, the cooling effect will be greatly reduced, resulting in too high battery temperature, affecting the charging and discharging performance and safety of the battery.
Prevent foreign matter from entering: The seal can also block foreign matter such as dust and impurities from the outside from entering the cooling system. Once these foreign objects enter, they can clog the cooling pipes, reduce the flow rate of the coolant, or chemically react with the coolant, which can corrode the components of the cooling system and affect its proper function.
Electrical insulation: In the area where the cooling system is close to the battery electrodes and other electrical components, the seal can also provide a certain electrical insulation function. This is because the coolant in the cooling system may be conductive, and the seal can prevent the coolant from coming into contact with the live part of the battery, preventing the occurrence of electrical accidents such as short circuits.

Material requirements
Corrosion resistance: Coolants commonly used in cooling systems, such as glycol-water mixtures, may have a corrosive effect on seal materials. Therefore, seal materials need to have good corrosion resistance, such as some high-performance rubber materials that can resist the chemical attack of coolant to ensure their structural integrity and sealing performance.
Temperature resistance and aging resistance: The cooling system has a wide range of operating temperatures, and the seals need to maintain good sealing performance at different temperatures. At the same time, due to long-term exposure to coolant and different temperatures, the seals also need to have good aging resistance and will not harden, brittle, or lose elasticity due to long-term use. For example, some silicone rubber seals retain good elasticity and sealing properties in the temperature range of -50°C to 200°C, and have good aging characteristics, making them suitable for use in power battery cooling systems.
Good elasticity and sealing: Seals need to be able to adapt to shape changes and assembly tolerances between cooling system components, and fill gaps through their good elasticity to achieve a tight seal. For example, at the junction of a cooling pipe, the seal needs to be able to maintain the sealing effect despite the slightest displacement or vibration that can occur in the pipe.

Common types and application scenarios
O-type sealing ring: O-type sealing ring is a common seal, that has a circular cross-section, and is installed in the sealing groove of the connecting joint, valve, and other parts of the cooling system pipeline. When the connector is tightened, the O-ring is squeezed out of shape to fill the gap in the connection and achieve the purpose of sealing. O-ring seals are widely used at various pipe interfaces of the power battery cooling system, such as coolant inlet and outlet, and at the connection between the radiator and the pipe.
Gaskets: Gaskets are usually used for sealing between large parts of the cooling system, such as between the radiator and the battery pack housing. It has a large area that covers the entire contact surface and effectively prevents coolant from leaking through large contact gaps. The shape and thickness of the gasket can be customized according to the specific sealing site requirements to suit different assembly conditions and sealing requirements.
