Back-up Rings

Back-Up Rings, as a special type of sealing device, are used to enhance the effectiveness of seals and prevent them from being extruded in high pressure or high temperature environments. In aircraft hydraulic systems, seals play a key role in preventing fluid leakage, but seals alone are often unable to cope with extreme operating conditions. This is where the backup ring comes in, working in tandem with the seal to form a solid sealing structure.

Specifically, the backup ring fits tightly on the outside of the seal, forming a barrier that effectively prevents the seal from deforming and extruding under high pressure or high temperature. At the same time, the support ring also has a certain degree of elasticity and abrasion resistance, can adapt to a variety of complex working environment, to ensure that the sealing effect of lasting stability.

The choice of material for back-up rings has a decisive influence on their performance. Currently, PTFE (Teflon™) is the ideal material for manufacturing back-up rings. Teflon™ has excellent chemical stability, high temperature resistance and good mechanical strength, enabling it to maintain stable performance in extreme operating environments.

In addition, support rings made of PTFE also have excellent wear and corrosion resistance, and can resist the erosion of various system fluids or vapours, thus extending the service life of the support ring. At the same time, this material also has excellent anti-aging properties, will not deteriorate over time, to ensure the long-term stability of the sealing effect.

In the aircraft hydraulic system, the application of the support ring is extensive and critical. Whether it is the landing gear, engine or other key components, all need to rely on the sealing system to ensure the normal flow of liquid and prevent leakage. As an important part of the sealing system, the performance of the bearing ring directly affects the stability and safety of the whole system.

Take the landing gear of an aircraft as an example, the landing gear is subjected to tremendous pressure and vibration during take-off, landing and taxiing. If the sealing system of the landing gear fails, it will lead to the leakage of hydraulic oil, which will affect the normal work of the landing gear. At this point, the support ring plays a key role, which works together with the sealing ring to ensure the stability and reliability of the landing gear sealing system.
