What are the common types of failures of O-rings in automotive air conditioning systems?

O-rings in automotive air conditioning systems are critical sealing elements, and they play an important role in preventing leakage of refrigerants and other operating media. However, there are many types of failures that O-rings may encounter in practical use, and here are some common failures and their causes:

Hardening: When O-rings are exposed to high temperatures for a long time, the rubber material will undergo a chemical reaction, resulting in an increase in hardness and a decrease in elasticity. This may be due to operating temperatures exceeding the heat resistance limit of the O-ring material, such as over 200°C, or due to aging and chemical exposure

Compression set: If the O-ring is compressed too much, it may result in a poor seal and reduced O-ring life. When designing, it is necessary to ensure that the compression ratio is within the appropriate range, for example, the compression ratio of cylindrical seals is usually between 10%~15%.

Leakage: Leakage is one of the most common failures of O-rings and can be caused by a variety of reasons, such as incompatibility of the O-ring material with the medium, improper trench design, installation damage, or insufficient compression

Abrasion: O-rings can wear out due to friction during movement, especially if the sealing surface finish is not smooth enough or there is abrasive debris. Choosing the right material and improving the sealing surface finish can reduce wear

Corrosion: Certain chemicals may react with O-ring materials, causing them to harden or corrode. This can be avoided by choosing materials that are resistant to chemical media

Bursting: In applications where pressure changes are rapid, O-rings can burst due to rapid pressure changes. Choosing materials that are harder and more elastic, as well as reducing the rate at which pressure changes, can reduce this risk

Installation damage: If not handled properly during installation, the O-ring may be damaged, resulting in seal failure. Proper installation methods and the use of tools are the key to preventing such failures

Permanent compression set: Prolonged or sustained high pressure can cause the O-ring to permanently deform and lose its sealing ability. This can be avoided by choosing materials that are resistant to high pressure and having a well-designed groove size

In order to ensure the effective sealing of O-rings and extend their service life, regular inspections and maintenance should be carried out, damaged or aging O-rings should be replaced in a timely manner, and the installation and working environment should be in line with the design requirements of O-rings.
