In the modern industrial field, the importance of sealing technology is self-evident. Among them, a Y-shaped seal is a common sealing element, its performance is directly related to the safe and stable operation of mechanical equipment. In this paper, we will explore the innovative design and material selection of Y-shaped seals, to provide a reference for the technological progress in related fields.

Innovative design of Y-shaped seal

Structure optimisation

The traditional Y-shaped seal has a relatively simple structure, which is mainly composed of a main lip and a secondary lip. In order to improve the sealing performance, we propose a Y-shaped seal with a 'confined area' design. This design creates a special area between the main lip and the secondary lip, which is filled with liquid through reciprocating motion, forming an incompressible 'trapped area'. When the main lip is working, the liquid pressure in the 'trapped area' is higher than the pressure in the working chamber, thus achieving a reliable sealing state.

According to the experimental data, the leakage of a Y-shaped sealing ring with a 'trapped area' design under high pressure and high-speed working conditions is reduced by more than 30% compared with the traditional structure.

Shape Improvement

In addition to structural optimization, we have also improved the shape of the Y-shaped seal. We have designed a Y-shaped seal with better sealing performance by introducing advanced computer-aided design technology. This seal has a more reasonable cross-section shape, which can better adapt to the sealing needs under different working conditions.

In practice, the improved Y-shaped seal has excellent sealing performance and wear resistance. According to user feedback, its service life has been increased by more than 20% compared with the traditional products.

Y-shaped seal material selection

Nitrile rubber (NBR)

Nitrile rubber is a commonly used material for Y-shaped seals. It has good oil resistance, abrasion resistance and heat resistance, and is suitable for sealing applications with operating temperatures ranging from -40°C to +120°C. However, NBR is less resistant to ketone solvents and oxidizing agents.

In practical applications, we have improved the solvent and alkali resistance of NBR by modifying it. Experimental data show that the resistance of modified NBR in ketone solvents has been enhanced by more than 50%.

Fluoroelastomer (FKM)

Fluoroelastomer is a high-quality material for Y-shaped seals. It has excellent oil resistance, solvent resistance and high-temperature resistance, and performs well in high-temperature and chemically corrosive environments. However, Viton is expensive.

In order to reduce the cost, we have investigated the compounding technology of Viton with other materials. By introducing appropriate amounts of fillers and additives, we successfully prepared a fluoroelastomer composite with excellent performance and low cost. Experimental data showed that the performance of the composite material was comparable to that of pure fluoroelastomer, but the cost was reduced by more than 30 percent.
