O Ring inner diameter, outer diameter, internal pressure and external pressure
There is a certain relationship between the inner diameter, outer diameter, internal pressure and external pressure of the O-ring.
- Inner Diameter: The inner diameter of the O-ring refers to the diameter of the center hole of the ring, that is, the inner diameter of the ring.
- Outer Diameter: The outer diameter of the O-ring refers to the outer diameter of the ring, that is, the overall diameter of the ring.
- Internal Pressure: Internal pressure refers to the pressure acting on the inside of the O-ring, that is, the pressure endured inside the ring.
- External Pressure: External pressure refers to the pressure acting on the outside of the O-ring, that is, the pressure on the outside of the ring.

The relationship is explained as follows
Relationship between inner diameter and outer diameter
There is a fixed relationship between inner diameter and outer diameter, that is, the outer diameter is equal to the inner diameter plus twice the cross-sectional thickness. It can be expressed as: outer diameter = inner diameter + 2 × cross-sectional thickness.
Relationship between inner diameter and internal pressure: The inner diameter has no direct impact on the internal pressure of the O-ring.
The internal pressure is mainly determined by the pressure acting on the O-ring cross section and has nothing to do with the inner diameter. When withstanding internal pressure, the outer diameter of the O-ring should be approximately equal to the outer diameter d7 of the groove, d7=d1+2d2.
Relationship between outer diameter and external pressure
The outer diameter has no direct impact on the external pressure of the O-ring. The external pressure is mainly determined by the pressure acting on the outside of the O-ring, regardless of the outer diameter. When withstanding external pressure, the inner diameter d1 of the O-ring should be equal to the inner diameter d8 of the groove, that is, d1=d8.
It should be noted that the selection of O-rings should be based on the specific application and design requirements, where the size of the inner and outer diameters should match the size of the sealing groove, and the appropriate material and size should be determined based on the operating pressure and temperature of the system. .
