What are Helical Spring Seals
Helical Spring Seals consist of wrapped ribbon metal springs mounted in a polymer sheath. This helical spring provides a relatively high load and deflection range, resulting in a sealing product that provides a very tight seal. As a high-load product, when dynamics are very slow or static, coil spring seals should be considered.
Advanced static and cryogenic sealing design
Helical spring designs (called helical spring seals, static seals, or cryogenic seals) are suitable for static applications due to high unit loads. It can be used in very slow or infrequent dynamic conditions when friction and wear are minor concerns with forced sealing.
Static sealing characteristics:
- Helical spring provides medium to high spring loads for static and slow dynamic conditions.
- Static seal designs include standard heel, extended heel, and flange heel.
- Available in a variety of sizes for industrial, aerospace, and military glands. Custom static seal sizes range from 0.125" to 48" in diameter.
- The closed seal design is suitable for applications where hardware breaks away from the seal under pressure.
Advantages of static sealing:
- Medium to high spring loads provide reliable sealing over a wide range of temperatures and pressures.
- Coil springs have close spacing and high unit loads, making them ideal for vacuum and cryogenic applications.
- A turned lip with a sharp edge provides a scraper/wiper action for sealing abrasive and/or viscous media.
- Seals are available with an extended heel option for improved crush resistance under high pressures and temperatures.
Product material selection
1. Stainless Steel: Stainless steel is one of the commonly used materials for Helical spring seals. It has good corrosion resistance and mechanical strength and is suitable for a wide range of working conditions and media.
2. Carbon Steel: Carbon steel is another common coil spring seal material. It has high strength and rigidity and is suitable for applications requiring higher mechanical properties.
3. Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE): PTFE is an excellent non-metallic sealing material. It has good chemical resistance, a low friction coefficient, and exquisite temperature stability. PTFE coil spring seals are commonly used in applications requiring high temperatures and chemically aggressive environments.
4. Polyetheretherketone (PEEK): PEEK is a high-performance engineering plastic with splendid high-temperature resistance, chemical corrosion resistance, and mechanical strength. PEEK helical spring seal is suitable for sealing requirements under extreme working conditions.
5. Rubber: In some specific applications, rubber materials such as Nitrile Rubber and Fluorocarbon Rubber can also be used as materials for coil spring seals. Rubber has good sealing performance and elasticity and is suitable for certain special media and working environments.
The appropriate coil spring seal material needs to be selected based on specific application requirements, media characteristics, and working environment.

Production Process
1. Material preparation: Select appropriate materials according to design requirements, such as stainless steel, carbon steel, polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), etc. Materials are usually supplied in the form of sheets, rods, or wires.
2. Spring manufacturing: According to the size and requirements of the seal, use the appropriate equipment and tools to cut, punch, bend, etc. the material to manufacture a spiral spring. This can be done by machining, cold bending, or heat treatment.
3. Sealing surface manufacturing: According to the design requirements, the sealing surface part is manufactured, typically using mechanical processing or forming technology. The sealing surface is typically flat or has a specific geometry to ensure sealing contact with the equipment or shaft.
4. Assembly of spring and sealing surface: Assemble the manufactured spring and sealing surface. This may involve using special tools or machines to secure the spring to the sealing surface to ensure a tight fit between them.
5. Surface treatment: Surface treatment is performed on the coil spring seal as needed. This can include polishing, plating, coatings, etc. to improve sealing performance, corrosion resistance, or cosmetic quality.
6. Inspection and testing: Inspect and test the produced coil spring seals to ensure that their quality and performance meet the requirements. This may include dimensional measurements, sealing performance testing, pressure testing, etc.
7. Packaging and delivery: Qualified coil spring seals are packaged, usually using appropriate packaging materials and methods, to ensure safety during transportation and storage.
Importantly, the production process of helical spring seals may vary depending on the manufacturer and specific product. The steps above provide a general overview, but there may be additional steps or differences in the actual production process.
Product inspection and testing
1. Appearance inspection: Visually inspect the appearance of the coil spring seal to see if there are any obvious defects, damage, or deformation.
2. Dimensional measurement: Use measuring tools (such as calipers, micrometers, etc.) to measure the key dimensions of the coil spring seal to verify whether it meets the design requirements.
3. Sealing performance test: Use appropriate testing equipment and methods to test the sealing performance of helical spring seals. Common testing methods include compression testing, vacuum testing, air tightness testing, etc. to determine the sealing effect of seals under different pressure, temperature, or medium conditions.
4. Strength and wear resistance test: Conduct strength and wear resistance tests on the coil spring seals to evaluate their reliability and life under working conditions. This can include material tensile testing, fatigue testing, friction and wear testing, etc.
5. Chemical analysis: The material composition in the spring seal is detected through chemical analysis methods to ensure that it meets the specified standards or requirements.
6. Temperature and pressure testing: Put the helical spring seal under specific temperature and pressure conditions and conduct tests to evaluate its performance and adaptability under extreme working conditions.
7. Compatibility test: The coil spring seal is contacted with a specific medium, and a compatibility test is performed to detect its chemical stability and corrosion resistance to the medium.
The choice of these methods depends on the specific requirements and application scenarios of helical spring seals. Manufacturers usually select appropriate testing methods and equipment to ensure the quality and performance of coil spring seals based on the product's design requirements and industry standards.
