Advantages and Disadvantages of the Rubber O-Ring Molding Process

The processing technology of rubber O-rings is relatively complicated, and there are many production steps. In the process of processing, in order to ensure that the elastic rubber becomes plasticized rubber with plasticity, it is necessary to effectively solve the contradiction between plasticity and elasticity.

With the development of technology, various processing technologies emerge in an endless stream. Various compounding agents are added to the rubber material to make semi-finished products, and then vulcanized to make the semi-finished products with certain plasticity become seals with high elasticity.

At present, there are three main molding vulcanization methods used by manufacturers for production, namely, compression molding, transfer molding (transfer molding) and injection molding. These three molding processes are currently used by manufacturers. Most manufacturers in my country use compression molding, while transfer molding and injection molding are relatively less used.

Rubber molding process

The rubber molding process is to place the mixed rubber blank in a mold and then use a flat vulcanizer to press it. The appropriate time, pressure and temperature need to be specified so that the product can be finally formed.

The molding pressure required for the compression molding process is higher than other process methods, so it belongs to the high-pressure molding method. It has high requirements for the mold for compression molding, and the mold must have high strength, high precision and high temperature resistance.

The commonly used compression molding method can be used to manufacture some sealing rings with more complex shapes, or the rubber can be placed in the mold with the help of the molded negative and positive molds and molded by heating.

Compression-Molding-Process

Advantages of compression molding

1. During compression molding, a high-temperature vulcanization process is required to effectively ensure the comprehensive performance of the produced sealing ring.

2. The sealing ring formed by compression molding has the characteristics of low internal stress, small warping deformation, and stable mechanical properties.

3. The shrinkage rate of the molded sealing ring is small and the repetition is good.

4. The dimensional accuracy of the sealing ring is high and the surface is smooth.

5. Products with complex structures can be molded at one time.

6. It can achieve large-scale production, greatly improve the efficiency of production, and the production cost is relatively low, which is suitable for mass production.

7. It is also suitable for multi-variety but small batch production.

Disadvantages of compression molding

1. Compression molding is not suitable for seals with complex shapes, such as concave, side slope or small hole seals.

2. Compression molding is not suitable for seals with high dimensional accuracy requirements.

3. Since the molding cycle time requirement is relatively long in the entire processing process, the physical exertion of the operator is also relatively large. After a long time, people are prone to fatigue, and once people are tired, human errors are prone to occur.

4. The flash of the produced sealing ring is thick, and a lot of work is needed to remove the flash later.

5. The quality of the sealing ring will be affected by the pre-molding quality of the rubber blank, the feeding method and the pressure method.

The advantages and disadvantages of the compression molding process of rubber O-rings are introduced here. As a commonly used molding process, the compression molding process has both advantages and disadvantages. Manufacturers usually choose different molding processes according to the characteristics of rubber seals.
